St. Catherine University invites applications for the Dean of the School for Humanities, Arts and Sciences.
The Dean of the School for Humanities, Arts and Sciences is a central advocate for a rigorous liberal arts and sciences curriculum at a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), rooted in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition with a commitment to women's education and leadership, and to provide strategic vision, leadership, and management for the School of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences (SHAS), which houses a wide array of academic programs at the graduate, associates, and bachelors levels, along with the Core Curriculum for undergraduates. The Dean fosters the success of our academic programs and our students, ensuring the quality of our programs using evidence-based practices, identifying and cultivating relationships with external partners to support the strategic direction of the school, and generating new resources through fundraising and grants, mentoring and supporting faculty and staff, ensuring an outstanding student experience, and effectively managing the overall budget of SHAS to achieve the best outcomes for our students.
Responsibilities:
Enhance the Student Experience: The Dean is expected to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to improving equitable student outcomes and promoting a welcoming and inclusive climate that values diversity and equity in student learning. Attention to the overall student experience, including articulation and development of essential skills students must possess to succeed in diverse and inclusive workplaces and communities, is essential, and will aid in recruitment and retention efforts. This includes attention and commitment to meeting the needs of adult, online, and traditional learners in all SHAS courses and programs. Collaboration with other academic units as well as support for high impact practices and co-curricular student opportunities is integral to the St. Kate's experience.
Strengthen Faculty Excellence: The Dean must help enrich and sustain a culture of excellent teaching, scholarship, service, and professional work, and support productive faculty careers. Leadership in the recruitment of faculty and staff to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments are essential to this work. A key to the Dean's leadership effectiveness will be to quickly establish an understanding of the people, programs, relationships, and partnerships that constitute the SHAS community. The Dean will lead the administration and faculty in continuing to develop a sense of shared community and commitment among the school's faculty and staff and contribute to a heightened quality of academic excellence in terms of instruction, curriculum, faculty scholarship, creative activity, and service. Implementing faculty retention, leadership development, and succession planning strategies that establish a stable foundation for strength and sustainability across all SHAS programs will also be key markers of a successful Dean.
Promote Academic Quality and Innovation: The Dean will collaborate with faculty to ensure ongoing quality and innovation in SHAS's academic programs as well as the Core Curriculum. The Dean will work closely with chairs and program directors to promote inclusive pedagogies and curricula that reflect diverse voices in scholarship and course content. The Dean is expected to lead in support of innovative teaching and the development of appropriate new academic programs. The Dean will also encourage collaborations with the other schools to develop interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary programs. To support academic excellence, the Dean will also need to establish and expand partnerships with the community to support alliances that will strengthen University programs, enhance connections with the cities and the region, and strengthen the pipeline for students and workforce development.
Ensure Strong Financial Management and Build Resources: As economic realities affect all of higher education, the Dean will need the fiscal acumen to enable strong financial management across all areas of the school's academic and administrative programs. The Dean will work to ensure that staffing and fiscal resources are allocated to appropriately meet the needs of all programs within the School of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences. The Dean will also be asked to oversee operating budgets, identify new and existing resources for program and infrastructure investment, be prepared to make appropriate changes in programs including identifying new opportunities and reconsidering existing programs as needed, consider efficiencies that will enable the best use of resources to achieve the educational goals of SHAS, and lead a conversation about potential new revenue streams. The Dean will be expected to work with the faculty, senior administration, and the Institutional Advancement team to articulate the strengths and needs of the academic programs to potential donors.
